Berlin Greer Duncan, age 84, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Tuesday, April 24, 2012, at his home.
He was born April 13, 1928, in Anderson County.
Mr. Duncan served his country in the United States Navy retiring after 30 years of service. He was a combat veteran of both World War II and the Korea War, and he also served for 10 years in the reserves during the Vietnam War. While serving his country, he received several commendations, medals, citations, badges and ribbons.
Following his military retirement, he moved back to Oliver Springs and began employment for Martin Marietta in Oak Ridge, working as a maintenance mechanic at the K-25 and Y-12 plants. Following his second retirement, he was employed at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs from 1979 until 1996.
He was a member of Sulphur Springs United Methodist Church in Dutch Valley and he attended First Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. Â
Berlin was preceded in death by his parents, Woody and Nola Braden Duncan; sisters, Dixie Graves and Rebecca Duncan; and brothers, Wilson, Andrew, Kyle, Roy, Lee, James, Doyle and Ivan Duncan. Â
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Giles Duncan of Oliver Springs; a son, Rodney Duncan and wife, Cheri, of Knoxville; daughter, Tina Howard and husband, Shane, of Oliver Springs; grandson, Colby Shane Howard of Oliver Springs; brother, Woody Joe Duncan of Oliver Springs; and sisters-in-law, Evelyn Bennett of Clinton and Sue Duncan of Oliver Springs. Â
He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, extended family members and special friends including Junior Hood.
In recent years, he traveled with a group of U.S. veterans to Washington, D.C., in honor of his service to his country. The program "HonorAir" was responsible for the veterans' transportation and Berlin's family, in lieu of flowers, request memorial contributions be made to: HonorAir Knoxville, 7536 Taggart Lane, Knoxville, TN 37938. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with Pastor Garvan Walls officiating.
Burial and graveside services, with full military honors, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Oliver Springs Cemetery.
