Eugene E. Wells, age 82, of Marlow, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.
Mr. Wells was born Oct. 22, 1929, in Briceville to the late Walter and Etta Vowell Wells. He was a decorated United States Army veteran having served during the Korean War. A member of the Poplar Creek Baptist Church, Eugene was a loving husband to his wife of 48 years, Myrtle; father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, fishing, hunting, gardening, and Atlanta Braves baseball.
Mr. Wells retired from the City of Oak Ridge in 1992 after 26 years of service in the Recreation and Parks Department. He volunteered with the Anderson County Rescue Squad for more than 20 years, and was a member of the Masonic Omega Lodge No. 536 in Oliver Springs and the Kerbela Shrine Temple in Knoxville.
In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by his brothers, Van Troy, William, and Walter; sisters, Viola Shelton and Mary Perry.
He is survived by his wife, Myrtle, of Marlow; son, James Wells, and his wife, Cindy, of Clinton; daughters, Rebecca Russell and her husband, Steve, of Claxton, and Doris Smith and her husband, Terry, of Gahanna, Ohio; sisters, Kitty Payne of Gregory, Mich., and Annabelle Melton of Lake City; grandchildren, Heather, Ashley, Emily, Bruce, Matthew, David, Jenny, and Sasha; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2012, at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home with the Rev. Allen Giles officiating.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 28, 2012, at Poplar Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
